Sullivan University Quality Enhancement Project (QEP) Original Assessment Plan2005-2007 |

Original QEP Assessment Strategy (2005-2007): |
|
The original QEP assessment strategy included two measures: Primary and Secondary. The Primary measures focused at the institutional-level using nationally recognized standardized instruments for assessing student engagement and critical thinking. The Secondary measures focused assessment at the program-level through selected comprehensive examinations representing the University's various academic programs. The assessment goal was to use these measures to determine the QEP's overall effectiveness at both levels as a means for demonstrating that student learning was improving throughout the University. The QEP assessment schedule is as follows:
During the Reaffirmation On-Site Committee's visit in early 2005, the visiting committee recommended that the Secondary (or program-level) measures be more reflective of the student learning outcomes being affected by QEP activities. Specifically, the committee recommended that 3 to 5 student learning outcomes be defined for each of the academic programs being monitored by the QEP for improvement of student learning. In response, academic leaders from each program identified 3 to 5 student learning outcomes for their respective programs, and reported student performance scores (i.e., Fall 2005 benchmark scores) for each student learning outcomes indentified for their respective program. Each year during the QEP assessment period, academic leaders from each academic program measured and compared their respective 3 to 5 student learning outcomes to the Fall 2005 benchmark and prior year's scores for program-level performance measurement and reporting. Following the first year's QEP assessment process, several methodology issues surfaced, requiring a revision to the QEP's assessment design. These discoveries and respective QEP assessment methodology adjustments can be reviewed at the 2008-2010 Revision Assessment Plan link. |

Primary Measures: |
|
The Sullivan University QEP uses two standardized assessments to assess the progress and impact on student engagement and learning. Specifically, the QEP uses the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) and Collegiate Assessment of Academic Proficiency (CAAP) instruments. |
|
Secondary Measures: |
|
Sullivan University also uses several of the currently employed student performance assessment instruments in its QEP effectiveness assessment process. These instruments include tools either developed internally or originated from external sources, are used to assess general educational performance, professional competence, and/or student satisfaction. The tools are used to measure student-learning gains at the departmental or programmatic levels (e.g., general education or accounting). Depending on the Department Chair and Program Director student engagement and learning goals, each academic leader identified 3 to 5 "targeted" student learning outcomes that they will monitor to assess the effectiveness of their respective QEP activities on improving student learning by increasing student engagement as it relates to the targeted instructional strategy (e.g., 2005, Active Learning).
Department Chairs and Program Directors
will develop plans for incorporating the
targeted instructional strategy (e.g.,
2005, Active Learning), implement their
respective plan, monitor its progress,
analyze the results, document their
experience, and adjust their classroom
practices and curricula for process
improvement purposes. These reports will
be summarized and compiled in the QEP
Annual Report. |
