Quality Enhancement Project (QEP)

What is the QEP?

By this point, almost everyone at the University has heard of the “QEP.”  Still, some of you may ask, “What is the QEP?”  The short answer: the QEP is a five-year project designed to improve student learning at all academic levels within the University! The QEP is a road map for getting us from where we currently are to where we want to be!  The real question is, “Where will it be taking us?”

Where QEP is taking us!

The QEP is an effort to revolutionize the way students are taught throughout the entire University!  The basic idea is to increase the use of interactive teaching methods to increase student involvement in the leaning process!  The QEP details the steps involved in training the Sullivan University faculty to better engage students in their learning process by using these more dynamic teaching techniques.  These new teaching strategies include:

  • Active learning

  • Problem-based learning

  • Collaborative learning, and

  • Experiential learning.

What does the QEP really mean?

It means that faculty members will be going back to school!  All full and part-time faculty members will take part in the training effort!  Each year's training activities will focus on a different instructional strategy.  For instance, the first year will be “active learning;” the second year will be “problem-based learning,” the third will be “collaborative learning;” and finally “experiential learning” techniques on the fourth year.  Then, after all the training is completed and teachers are using these new strategies in their classrooms, we will measure how much impact the QEP had on improving student learning!

Another important part is the faculty grants.  Each year we will award four $5,000 faculty grants which will allow teachers to concentrate their learning experience in a particular targeted instructional strategy.  Then, after completing their research each grant recipient will train their peers in what they learned—teachers teaching each other!

Bottom-line!

At the very heart of the QEP is change—changing the way we teach, and of course, the way our student's learn!  The next five years should be quite a ride!
